Bash Compactor: Moaning in the Morning
Learning new moves from Jonté Moaning
Saturday mornings for me always evoke cartoons, but last week I started my Saturday morning with Moaning. It’s not what you’re thinking; I’m talking about Jonté Moaning, the sprightly dancer, singer and personality. This dude is the real deal. Get this: His first big dancing gig was with Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl the time she showed her nipple. He’s appeared with Madonna and choreographed Beyoncé. And on this morning, he was coming to my health club to give me a private dance lesson. Read more

Bash Compactor: Under the Bridge
The world of Pussy Faggot
Faggots usually avoid pussy. It’s become a cliché. But last week Earl Dax reunited them with Pussy Faggot!, an evening of queer performance and culture at practically-in-the-East-River spot The Delancey Lounge, attracting a motley crew of performers and attendees, with something for everyone—faggots, pussies, pansies, drag queens and kings, straights and anyone who likes to have fun. Bash Compactor: That’s Him in the Corner
“Hey! That’s Patti Smith!” one of my friends whispered. Who? Huh? I didn’t see her anywhere, but was told she was wearing a blue cap with granny glasses. “There’s Debbie Harry!” I didn’t spot either of them, but then things have changed since the ’70s. We all look a little different. Michael Stipe was easier to spot with his thick black glasses, standing at the door greeting everyone who entered the gallery. Read more Read it in print

Bash Compactor: Don’t Go Gentle
Trouble loves me and I love trouble. I like to start a new year off with a bang, but not a tumble. “Are you OK?” someone asked, concerned. Not really—my lip was bleeding and my ankle sprained. I shouldn’t have worn those red patent leather slides but it was the Red & Black Masquerade Ball that the Rated X Panty Party team held at Don Hills. Shortly after I arrived, I tripped over a drum set near the stage. I´m a klutz. Two nights earlier, my warm winter coat was pilfered at The Gates. Aren’t clubs fun! But the crowd at Rated X was hot, clad in latex and leather, chains and studs, with spiked hair and pierced, tattooed faces. It was a dark and scary New Year’s Eve, with none of those vanilla party hats and noisemakers in sight. Read more Read it in print

Bash Compactor: F-ed Up
Waking up last Saturday morning, I noticed a stamp on my hand that read “Fuck You.” It was just my style. And also very much the style of The F Word—humor and a touch of crass sass—which has resumed in a new setting at Rebel on West 30th Street after leaving Santos Party House. The party will be held every Friday night from now on, hosted by the inimitable Godfather of nightlife Michael Formika Jones.“This will be a real New York party—a big club with cheap drinks, DJs who play what they want instead of horrible pop music and a friendly mixed crowd,” he told me. Expect men, women, bears, cubs, twinks, dykes, trannies, lap dancers, hot go-go boys and disco divas like me.You’ll get to see musical acts like Sylvia Tosun, Peaches, Joey Arias and Jasper James. “It’ll be a fourroom creative party that stimulates you artistically, physically and musically,” he said. It’s been said that it would take an open bar to get me into one of those slick new health clubs, and that was no freakin’ joke. Well, I beg to differ, motherfucker. Spungen was both geisha and den mother to a bunch of unwashed punk rock dopers. She did it her way. Santos Party House lives up to its name. How in the hell else could it play host to a hard-core industrial Goth show and then, minutes later, host the F Word, presided over by Mistress Formika Jones and attended by every queer and drag queen in town?
